What are the Best Gifts to Buy for Women?

If it’s difficult to assemble a wide-reaching or universal gift guide for men, doing so for women may seem an almost impossible task (or at least that’s what many men seem to think!). Just as for men, we have to consider hard factors such as age, physical type, marital status, income level and location, etc. and “softer” factors such as attitudes, values, social preferences and behaviors. So, what is the best way to begin finding that good “fit” of a gift for a particular woman?

One way to address this is to apply a framework that identifies which interests are most prominent. Interests are a powerful guide to where an individual may well spend money on himself and therefore be appreciative of a gift in the same broad category. For example, a woman might have interests in any one, two, three or even all four of the following categories:

  1. Activity/Health
  2. Home/Entertainment
  3. Appearance
  4. Relaxation

Once we have a primary category, we then identify sub-categories of most interest. A few examples of these interests are shown below:

HOME/ENTERTAINMENT

  • Food/cooking,
  • Plants and flowers
  • Group parties
  • Theater/Movies,
  • Eating out,
  • Arts,
  • Travel

ACTIVITY/HEALTH

  • Sports (which one?)
  • Hobbies (which?)
  • Dancing
  • Hiking/walking
  • Yoga/Pilates
  • Swimming
  • Exercise/Gym

PERSONAL CARE

  • Apparel/fashion
  • Lingerie
  • Perfume
  • Accessories
  • Jewelry
  • Cosmetics
  • Foot care/ accessories

RELAXATION

  • Reading/Writing
  • Gardening,
  • Animals (which?),
  • Treats/Candies
  • Meditation,
  • Games
  • Spa/Massage

These lists are just a few of the sub-categories we have identified. By discovering interest in a few of these, the capacity to narrow down what is likely to be valued as a possible gift is made considerably easier, and the search for options in the category takes on a concentrated focus. Now, all you have to do is find out what these interests actually are!

Of course, it is also important to remember that a gift can be physical and experiential but that’s the subject of another article.
